Canoeing camping expedition - Scotland

This is a classic canoe camping journey from coast to coast through the spectacular loch and river system of the Great Glen, including canoeing on Loch Ness, or more advanced river locations.

The adventure begins just outside Fort William on the easy, sheltered water of the Caledonian Canal. We then journey through a series of amazing lochs before finishing at Inverness on the other side of Scotland!

The journey includes some straightforward river and loch paddling and, if water levels are high enough, we may also run a couple of river stretches instead of following the canal. We may even sail rafted canoes if the wind conditions are favourable.

Throughout the expedition, coaching will be given to help you develop your paddling skills, so by the end of the route, you will not only have enjoyed a unique journey, you will also be a more competent canoeist.

Maximum group size: 8 people

Experience

This canoe holiday is suitable for people with little or no experience of canoeing, as well as more experienced paddlers who wish to join a guided trip. All people need to be fit enough to undertake 5 full days of activity, including some straightforward portages and 4 overnight camps.

What's included in this canoe holiday:

  • 5 days canoeing in the Great Glen
  • 4 nights wild camping, including tents and group camping equipment
  • All transport during the trip
  • All guiding and instruction during the trip from a qualified guide
  • Use of canoes and all related equipment
  • All meals from lunch Monday to lunch Friday

On our Open Canoeing expeditions, we camp in spectacular locations near the waterway on which we have travelled. In order to minimise our impact, you will be expected to share a tent with another expedition member of the same sex. If you really would prefer to have a tent of your own, you can either bring your own or pay a £50 supplement. Please note that this may also mean extra load-carrying for you at portages!

Meals and Cooking duties

While the leader will co-ordinate and undertake as much of the cooking as possible on the trip, everyone is expected to help out as this ensures the best meals in the shortest possible time after what are often long days in the mountains.

Fine food is essential to all our trips and expeditions are no different. Using Open Canoes, we are less constrained by weight and therefore have the opportunity to carry food which we would be unable to take on a walking expedition. The scope for imaginative and original meals is therefore enhanced and we will prepare these over our base-camp style dual burner stove and often over an open fire.

Cost £425.00 per person
